Dreaming of hearing that 5cyl symphony from your mk1?
Here is your kit to make that a reality.. Grab an 07k donor motor from a mk5 or mk6, be sure to get your harnesses and ecu from the same car or the same engine code, I personally prefer the CBTA from 09-12 as it is a mafless system making your intake plumbing cleaner, it also takes a turbo file very nicely..
The kit is designed for to use the mk4 4cyl transmissions.. 1.8t, 2.0, or TDI (I prefer the 1.8t with a TDI fifth gear). The 02a transmissions from the mk3 chassis cars do not have the mounting bosses on them needed to mount this trans in a mk1 with this kit. The 0A4 trans that came in the mk5 cars is slightly wider than the 02j I designed this kit for, the 04A will not fit with my mounts.
The motor installs best from the bottom up, but top down can work as well, you will need to trim or hammer a small piece of your inner fender on the drivers side (LHD) pictured below

Basic Kit includes
- Powdercoated Motor and Transmission Mounts with Bushings and Hardware
- Custom Axle Shafts and CV joints for 100mm Flanges on an 02j Transmission
Several items are Optional to make your install easier or more complete
- Speedo cable to drive your mk1 speedometer off the 02j transmission
- Shift box adapter plate to mount the 02j shift box into your mk1 (from underneath)
- Cable clutch or Hydro Clutch control
- Radiator cooling package – includes fans mounted on a shroud with relay and thermoswitch wired up
- 100mm Flanges – if you have a 1.8t 02j trans you will need these to use our axle kit
- 07k Spin on filter adapter – this is optional, but if you dont use it be prepared to “clearance” your front core support as needed for the stock filter housing gets extremely close and changing oil will be a hassle
- 07k billet valve cover – this is pure shiny show points, the stock valve cover fits and clears, this does not have a baffle so you will need a baffled can – uses AN10 fittings
- 07k ac compressor delete kit – does exactly what it sounds like, removes your ac compressor, since these compressors are not clutched you may have issues running it without lubrication, hence the delete kit
- Tach adapter – if you want a working tach you will need an adapter to convert the signal from the coil to something your mk1 understands
- Maf adapter, making your own fresh air intake, these are billet aluminum pieces to be welded onto your intake tube.
