VR-lequin

S&P’s take on a VR6 Harlequin.

Almost everyone has seen one, whether or not they knew it was a purpose built car and not an accident, who knows…

In 1996 Volkswagen built a small batch of cars for a promotional purpose. They were built on a 4 door Golf GL chassis, the only real interior difference was the seat upholstery, it was the same fabric used in the “joker” trim on European models of the same era.  The outside is where the “magic” happened, VW took panels from 4 base color cars (Red, Blue, Green and Yellow) and swapped the removable panels between the other base color cars, leaving you with a very loud exterior.

 

Fast forward to 2015, and I have an opportunity to buy a very sad, yellow base harlequin locally.  It had been resprayed at some point to be all yellow, but the colored panels were peeking through the worn paint.  The driveline was tired, the interior was beyond tired, it was time for either a restoration, or euthanasia…

I sent the car off in pieces to my local painter, he began smoothing out life’s abuses and owners neglect, fixing shopping cart dings, and poorly placed jack stands.  We needed a new hatch, or at least a tub that wouldn’t fall out every time you closed the hatch or went over a bump.

I found someone parting a 4 door golf, that had a lot of Euro market parts, hatch, bumpers, core supports, rebars, etc.  We took it all.

Next on the list was the interior, after looking and not finding anyone wanting to sell their limited edition seats, I spoke with Kip at Loves Trim Shop and worked out a plan for some new threads.  Mk2 Recaros on mk3 bases, leather wrapped, suede inlays and stitching to match the colors outside, without making the interior too loud to enjoy driving it.

That left me to get started on the driveline, the stock ABA was no different in the harlequin cars than it was in a standard Golf GL.

I had a 2.8 24v from a GTI that was wrecked, I had the machine shop go through the block, hone and a ring job, new bearings, new chains, guides, gaskets etc.

I couldn’t help myself, since I had it all in pieces I painted each section of the motor in the matching colors of the car, engine block, head, upper timing cover, lower timing cover, valve cover, intake, accessories, brackets…
I was seeing spots from all of the painting and planning.

Now that the car had been painted back to its original colors, engine painted and assembled and interior back from Love’s, it was time to make it a whole car again.
This is always the fun part, assembly is very gratifying.

Since the interior itself wasn’t very “loud”, Brandon Rosensteel at EuroGlow made an overlay for me.

Once the car was fully assembled, we could enjoy the best part of a vr6 swap – DRIVING!

During this build, a lady had contacted me about wanting to purchase the car when it was done. That is another story all together and arguably better than the one I just told you.

Matts 1981 VRirocco

Matt wanted to be able to jump in his Scirocco and drive it everyday, without worrying about the failing CIS system leaving him on the side of the road.   To overhaul the 1.8 and rebuild the CIS system was a realistic option, however after looking at the cost of the rebuild he realized he was well on his way to a later model motor swap.  Even better.  Better mileage from an 02 controlled fuel system, more power, easier to find parts. Win-win!

The rebuild of a 96 harlequin

We will be documenting (as we can) the rebuilding process of a 96 VW Golf Harlequin edition.  Full respray, updated driveline and a refreshed interior..   All chassis parts will be refreshed with new parts.

This is chassis number 101 of 264 produced in 96 only as a Volkswagen promotional vehicle.

We received the car in less than a desirable state.  At one time it had been resprayed (poorly) yellow over its colored panels.  The joker seats were in rough shape, it had the usual mk3 rotten floor boards, a fallen door hinge and crushed rocker. vrlaquin6

24k – Sal’s Vr6 Swapped Mk2 Golf

Sal Robertson, co-owner of S&P Automotive, bought this car a little over a year ago. Having owned and built a lot of different VWs, he decided to let this one sit for a while whilst he decided ultimately what direction to go with the car.

To kick things off, Sal shipped the car off to his painter to have the car resprayed in the OEM LE1V Gold Metallic, thus beginning with the car’s moniker of 24K.

While the car was away a low mileage 24V VR6 and a 1995 2.0 GTI donor car were sourced. The 4 lug suspension, coilovers, Nuespeed F&R sways, 10.1” brakes for a base were reappropriated, and a host of new parts from axles, and brakes, down to the tie-rods and some hot cams were thrown in the mix.

After getting the car back, Sal went to town. Inside an awesome set of low bolster Recaros were placed in the front and matched to the OEM tweed on the rears and the door cards. The dash and plastics were re-dyed to the original dark brown, and the cluster was treated to some Autometer ES gauges to keep an eye on things under the hood.

The car presently rides on those pristine Ronal Turbos IIs and perfectly fitted Kumhos, but we don’t know for sure that those will be permanent…

Eurobumpers and e-code lights finish up the exterior of the car, keeping it simple and classic.

As far as entertainment, and the sound system… What better soundtrack could one have than a mildly massaged 2.8 24V VR exhaling through a 2.5” Borla exhaust? IMHO, none. Whilst idling, the car gently purrs with nary a loud rumble to clue you in on the work that has gone on; until you hit the pedal on the right, that is.

Some might call it too simple, saying that it needs some 16 by eleventy wheels, mad camber, and tires that look impossible to mount or drive on. But, this car… clean, classy, and 24K all the way.

Another fine example of S&P Original goodness, when Seth saw this thing, he had to have it.

It wasn’t in its current state when he bought it from Sal & Perry, it took a little of Seth’s imagination and S&P’s elbow grease to fit the 12v vr6, complete with fully polished Schrick intake manifold.

Yea, those are common, just roll out to your local bone yard, they’re everywhere…
While Sal chose the old school feel with the golf, Seth felt that the original Recaro Trophies just werent quite what he was looking for and opted for front & rear Recaros from a Mk4 GLI.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about keeping certain cars true to their vintage roots, but there’s a lot to be said about a slightly more modern, comfortable seat, that’ll hold you through the twisties.

These days, low seems to be the only thing people think about when “building” a car. And though I’m a fan of all aspects of suspension and wheel fitment, I have to say, its quite relieving to come across enthusiasts these days who can build their cars and drive them, rather than garage queens and speed-bump dodgers.
