We will be documenting (as we can) the rebuilding process of a 96 VW Golf Harlequin edition. Full respray, updated driveline and a refreshed interior.. All chassis parts will be refreshed with new parts.
This is chassis number 101 of 264 produced in 96 only as a Volkswagen promotional vehicle.

We received the car in less than a desirable state. At one time it had been resprayed (poorly) yellow over its colored panels. The joker seats were in rough shape, it had the usual mk3 rotten floor boards, a fallen door hinge and crushed rocker.

Over the past couple months we have finished a few projects you may be interested in.
1983 Rabbit GTI o VR6 Swap
We took a tired 1983 GTI and added 1.5″ of steel to the rear arches and 1″ to the fronts, had it painted factory black, and stuffed a VR6 into it..
An early westy front end was cloned from parts we had and the existing core support.
Stewart Warner gauges set into a mk2 dash panel lets the owner know what is going on under the hood.
1990 Jetta Coupe
We rescued this coupe with a blown headgasket on its VR6 swap. After looking the car over we decided it needed a complete redo.
Rebuilt the motor with new rings stock pistons and new bearings, head was sent off to the machine shop for a refresh, and new chains were installed.
Car was then disassembled and sent off to paint where it is almost done and ready to come back to us for final assembly.
Sal Robertson, co-owner of S&P Automotive, bought this car a little over a year ago. Having owned and built a lot of different VWs, he decided to let this one sit for a while whilst he decided ultimately what direction to go with the car.
To kick things off, Sal shipped the car off to his painter to have the car resprayed in the OEM LE1V Gold Metallic, thus beginning with the car’s moniker of 24K.
While the car was away a low mileage 24V VR6 and a 1995 2.0 GTI donor car were sourced. The 4 lug suspension, coilovers, Nuespeed F&R sways, 10.1” brakes for a base were reappropriated, and a host of new parts from axles, and brakes, down to the tie-rods and some hot cams were thrown in the mix.
After getting the car back, Sal went to town. Inside an awesome set of low bolster Recaros were placed in the front and matched to the OEM tweed on the rears and the door cards. The dash and plastics were re-dyed to the original dark brown, and the cluster was treated to some Autometer ES gauges to keep an eye on things under the hood.
The car presently rides on those pristine Ronal Turbos IIs and perfectly fitted Kumhos, but we don’t know for sure that those will be permanent…
Eurobumpers and e-code lights finish up the exterior of the car, keeping it simple and classic.
As far as entertainment, and the sound system… What better soundtrack could one have than a mildly massaged 2.8 24V VR exhaling through a 2.5” Borla exhaust? IMHO, none. Whilst idling, the car gently purrs with nary a loud rumble to clue you in on the work that has gone on; until you hit the pedal on the right, that is.
Some might call it too simple, saying that it needs some 16 by eleventy wheels, mad camber, and tires that look impossible to mount or drive on. But, this car… clean, classy, and 24K all the way.

But we can’t forget about Seth’s Jetta!!!
Another fine example of S&P Original goodness, when Seth saw this thing, he had to have it.
It wasn’t in its current state when he bought it from Sal & Perry, it took a little of Seth’s imagination and S&P’s elbow grease to fit the 12v vr6, complete with fully polished Schrick intake manifold.
Yea, those are common, just roll out to your local bone yard, they’re everywhere…
While Sal chose the old school feel with the golf, Seth felt that the original Recaro Trophies just werent quite what he was looking for and opted for front & rear Recaros from a Mk4 GLI.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about keeping certain cars true to their vintage roots, but there’s a lot to be said about a slightly more modern, comfortable seat, that’ll hold you through the twisties.
These days, low seems to be the only thing people think about when “building” a car. And though I’m a fan of all aspects of suspension and wheel fitment, I have to say, its quite relieving to come across enthusiasts these days who can build their cars and drive them, rather than garage queens and speed-bump dodgers.

Sometimes people just need to get back to the basics, or at least appear like they are. With alot of the automotive enthusiasts leaning toward how their car “sits”, going as far as making sure the angle of their stretch matches the curve of their freshly rolled fender. All of that just to have a speed bump ruin their day, or burn their tires off on the fender lip instead of the asphalt, it seems like alot of time wasted on something that didn’t make it anymore fun to drive (for me).
So I set out to build something that looked unassuming to most people. There have been plenty of mk2 VR6 swaps, in fact there is an entire forum community dedicated to it. However, 99% of the swaps you see, are the 12v version from a 93-99 MK3/passat or corrado. The 2.8 BDF motor was a great improvement to its slightly older, yet less refined brother, the AAA, (which was renamed the AFP for the mk4 generation even though the internals are the same). The BDF also MAY be the little brother to the R32 motor, but it is no slouch by any means. (I think the R motor is on PEDs anyway) ..
I was able to reuse and refresh the factory tweed interior, found a few missing early westy parts, even scored a set of low bolster tweed Recaros. A set of Ronals holds the car to the ground while providing the “This car may still have an 8v in it look” that I was looking for.
I will have to admit, I like to make sure the car looks good, there are alot of painted or color matched parts on this car, but there is no avoiding corners, bumps or dips in fear of my tires colliding with my fenders. I intend to drive this car, and enjoy every corner, straightaway and chicane (within the posted speed limits of course).
In closing, I could not be happier with this car, the way it drives or the way it looks, you can have a good looking car that can also enjoy a mountain drive. Put the PS3 controller down and go for a drive. Any day driving your project or creation is better than anything sony can simulate.
